Soyong saw it many times while she was working at the Park estate: Yul Mu coming home from Oktajeong1Oktajeong is a kisaeng house. completely drunk with traces of rouge all over his collar and face. Her spies inside the kisaeng house told Soyong he always stayed longer than the other men, bragging to the women how great his life is going to be after all the misery he had endured. Chapter 20: Walk Into the Darkness

Soyong nestles deeper into Wonbeom’s warm embrace, breathing in his scent, a comforting mix of jasmine and fir. Her back is pressed against his chest and he whispers into her ear about all the things he wishes for them to do together.

She feels safe. At peace. Loved.

Soyong wants the whole world to stop for a moment and let her capture everything about the love of her life to memory.

Chapter 19: Completeness

Kim Soyong has always been inconsistent, saying and doing whatever she puts her mind to. But one thing is constant: she runs away after intimacy.

It is always this way: Wonbeom takes a step forward and she takes two steps back. Maybe it is his punishment for the way things were in their past, when no matter how hard Soyong tried to get along with him, he always turned his back on her.

Chapter 18: Yours to Choose

I know that we’re both afraid
We both made the same mistakes
An open heart is an open wound to you
And in the wind of a heavy choice
Love has a quiet voice
Still your mind, now I’m yours to choose…

Christina Perry – “The words”

Rain drops fall on Wonbeom’s face in the chilly night. In the darkness of the night his sword sheens with every movement. Without an opponent to draw his attention, he gets lost in his own thoughts.

He doesn’t want to start another fight with his Queen, so he has once again decided to give her however much space she needs. Tomorrow’s mission is too important for them to risk with distress from another argument.

Chapter 17: Distancing

Hyun-ki slowly blinks his eyes and yawns, drifting asleep to the sound of his mother’s soft voice. Soyong can’t take her eyes off of her precious boy as she hums the lullaby for him. It is a song her nanny used to sing to her when she was little. A song about a place where dreams come true and troubles melt like lemon drops1The lullaby is “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. You can listen to it here in Meet me halfway fanmix..

Way up high
There’s a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true

Predictably, Court Lady Choi grumbles that Soyong doesn’t take her well-being seriously enough, while Hong Yeon looks at Soyong with admiration and a wide smile. Neither of her friends are surprised with her actions, as if it is a natural thing for the Queen to pretend to be someone of lowborn status.

Chapter 13: The portrait

Hwa Jin’s head rests on Gyeong-eung’s shoulder, his cheek lying against the top of her head. To her joy, he is sleeping with her tonight now that he and his men are no longer searching for the Queen. The stillness of the night feels surreal after such an eventful day.

Today had been the most interesting, and perhaps even the best, day she had had in the past year: first her adventure at the royal villa with the Queen, then this evening with the deliberation in their gazebo. Hwa Jin feels trusted, as if her opinion is valued as it used to be a long time ago before the royal wedding. Now she’s a part of a team again and maybe she could even participate in the mission later.
